The First Day of Divali – Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanteras
This day falls two days before Divali, which is the thirteenth day of the month of Kaartik. This day is celebrated to honor the Great Physician of the Gods, Dhanvantari Vaidya who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Dhanvantari Vaidya emerged from the churning of the ocean in Smnundra Manthan. He is the father of medicine and Ayurveda (the science of medicine). The word “Dhan” means wealth. On this auspicious day, the women of Hindu homes clean their homes and purchase something gold or silver along with one or two new utensils.

The Second Day of Divali – Narak Chaturdashi
This day falls the day before Divali. This is the second day of the five-day festival in which Hindus acknowledge the slaying of the demon King Narakasura by Lord Krishna. This day is celebrated to pay homage to the God of Death, Lord Yamraaj. On this auspicious day, every person starts off the morning with a bath at dawn. Libations are then offered to Lord Yamraaj three times in the evening. A small deeya (the “Jam Deeya”) is lit and placed outside the entrance of the home facing south, where the worship takes place. This worship is done to prevent premature death within the home.

The Third Day of Divali – The Festival of Lights
This day is the highlight of the festival and is celebrated in every Hindu home worldwide. In the days preceding this celebration, the home and its surroundings are cleaned, washed and painted and places of worship are decorated to celebrate this auspicious day. Throughout the day Lakshmi Puja is performed to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity, into the home. The first nine deeyas are lit and kept lighting throughout the day, and devotees then break their fast with a feast that they prepare during that day. On this day people ask each other’s forgiveness for wrongs committed knowingly or unknowingly, and give gifts and sweets to reinforce their relationships.

The Fourth Day of Divali – Goverdhan Puja
On the fourth day of Divali the Goverdhan Puja is performed to remember Lord Krishna’s salvation of the people of Vrindaavana. In this village many years ago, the people prayed to the Lord Indra. They believed that Lord Indra sent the rains, which made their crops, grow. Lord Krishna came along and persuaded the people to worship the mountain Govardhan, because the mountain and the land around it were fertile. This did not please Lord Indra and one night as the villagers slept, Lord Indra sought revenge. He sent thunder and torrential rain down on the village. Lord Krishna saved the villagers by lifting the top of the mountain with his finger. Underneath it, the people gathered until the storm passed.

The Fifth Day of Divali – Bhaiya Dooj
On the fifth day of Divali, Bhaiya Dooj, or Brother’s Protection Day is celebrated, which honors the special relationship between brothers and sisters. The celebration of this day is similar to the celebration of Raksha Bandhan. On this day, sisters visit the homes of their brothers (it is said to be a bad omen if a bother visits the home of his sister on this day). Sisters place the tilak (a sacred mark) on their brothers’ forehead as a symbol of protection; they then perform arti and pray for their brothers’ health and happiness. Brothers in return pamper their sisters by giving gifts and promise them to stand by their side through all hardships in life.

Divali Nagar Inc was formed in September of 2008 here in Ft Lauderdale Florida. The first celebration took place at the prestigious Broward Cricket Park in Lauderhill, Florida for Divali 2008. There were dances, songs, music, food and other entertainment for all. This was the foundation for the now vibrant and functional Divali Nagar committee here in the USA. Celebrations last year was from Thursday October 28th – Saturday October 30th 2010. Now that we had the largest crowd ever assembled for an event of this type in this continent, we are celebrating Divali at the nagar 2011 from Friday October 21st – Sunday October 23rd.
